Test Instructions
These instructions are intended for testing large buildings, such as schools, commercial buildings, or multifamily buildings.
If you are not familiar with our radon test kits, we strongly recommend reading the individual test instructions here.
Test Protocols / Standards
Depending on the reason for your test, it may be required to follow national consensus testing standards. These standards define the proper way to test a building to achieve scientifically defensible test results.
The current nationally-recognized testing standards are approved by ANSI and are available at standards.aarst.org.
Standards do not replace test instructions; please read test instructions if you are not familiar with our radon test kits.
These ANSI standards substantially improve on old EPA standards. We highly recommend following ANSI standards for any testing project.
Test Data
Test data must be provided electronically. Three options are available:
- RapidScan: rapidscan.aelabs.com
Recommended option
Use your cell phone to scan kit barcodes and easily log data in the field. - Excel: aelabs.com/Excel
Alternative to RapidScan
Download and complete the spreadsheet, then email it to us at radon@aelabs.com - Registration: register.aelabs.com
Best for single-family testing
Register individual tests online.
Shipping
Tests are time sensitive and must arrive in the lab within 10 days of the end of the test. The faster your test arrives in the lab, the more accurate your results will be.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Missing Information
For a valid test result, you must provide:
- All test dates & times.
- A test address zip code.
Dates & times are required for all tests, even QA tests like blanks.
Incorrect Information
Be certain to record all information you need on the test report accurately and
completely. Correcting inaccurate data is very time consuming and will delay your report.
Shipping Delay
Ship promptly! Tests are time sensitive. Tests received more than 10 days after the end of the test may be invalid.
Shipping Damage
Ensure your kits are packed tightly, use padding if necessary.
Improper Sealing
Each test must be individually sealed in its own foil-lined mailer to prevent cross-
contamination. You may use a double-seal Ziplock style bag if needed.
Suggestions & Tips
Educate Staff & Occupants
Informing staff and building occupants that radon testing will be occurring is very important to success. For testing performed under ANSI standards, properly notifying occupants is required and may also be an legal requirement.
We have provided some basic educational templates for your use. You can download them here. You are welcome to modify the files for your use.
Plan for QA
Ensure you have a proper QA plan in place. This protects you and your business by ensuring you have the correct documentation and processes to produce scientifically defensible results.
Successful testing requires proper QA. ANSI standards (available above) provide full details on QA requirements.
Clearly Label Tests
During the test, we recommend placing a note near the test stating that radon testing is in progress and should not be disturbed.
Providing your contact information can be helpful so occupants can ask questions and problems can be avoided.
We have included three basic templates for your use. You can download them here. You are welcome to modify the files for your use.
- Standard (normal) tests.
- Duplicate tests (where two tests are placed side-by-side)
- Blank tests (where tests are intentionally left unopened)
Place Extra Tests
Things can go wrong during testing. Occupants can move, damange, or lose tests, or you may be unable to retrieve them.
ANSI testing protocols allow for a certain failure rate, but if too many tests fail you may have to repeat the entire testing process. A few extra testing device is typically much less expensive than a full repeat test.
Consider placing extra tests - testing more areas than required by standard, and including more QA tests (duplicates & blanks) than required by standard.
