How does the test work?

You will receive a test in the mail from an independent laboratory we partner with. Testing your home is simple and consists of just a few steps:

  1. Pick a spot in your home to test.
  2. Open the test kit and leave it out for 2-4 days.
  3. Register your test information online, or complete the provided paper form.
  4. Seal the test in the provided zip-top return shipper.
  5. Ship your test back to the lab.
  6. Test results will be sent to you 3-5 business days after the lab receives your kit.

Why do I need to test?

Radon gas is the #1 cause of lung cancer for non-smokers and is responsible for at least 22,000 deaths in the US each year. Smokers and former smokers are especially at risk.

Radon gas is odorless, colorless, and tasteless. The only way to know if you have radon is to test. Testing is simple, inexpensive, and reliable.

Why is radon dangerous?

Radon gas is ubiquitous, meaning it is present everywhere. At low concentrations, such as what you find outdoors, radon gas is not a significant health hazard. In buildings, radon can enter the structure through the foundation and become concentrated at very high levels.

Radon gas is radioactive. When you breathe radon, it can undergo radioactive decay inside your lungs. This turns radon into a different atom - Polonium - which is also radioactive. A single radon atom can exposure your lung cells and DNA to 3 different radioactive Alpha particles in just 30 minutes!

These Alpha particles can damage your lung cells and DNA and cause cancer.

Radon gas is primarily a health risk over long periods of time. The higher your radon level, the more dangerous is it.

What happens if I have radon?

It's very likely that your test will find some radon, because radon gas is ubiquitous (meaning it exists everywhere). Your lab report will contain information on what radon level is considered a major health hazard and what to do next.

Fixing a radon problem is simple and is called "mitigation". This involves installing a system to remove radon from your home, called a "Radon Mitigation System"

If you radon levels are elevated, SWAT Environmental will be happy to provide you with an estimate to fix your radon problem. Mitigation systems are affordable, effective, and usually last a very long time without the need for any maintenance or repair.

How many tests do I need?

For most situations, a single test is all you need. If you have a very large house, or multiple types of foundations, additional tests may be required.

For most customers, we advise performing a single short term test on the lowest level of the home suitable for occupancy (this is usually where radon is the highest). Depending on the results of this first test, you may choose to test more, or you may prefer to immediately fix the problem through a process called mitigation.
